About

RICHARD WESTERHUIS (1965) IS AN ARTIST, ART COLLECTOR AND ENTREPRENEUR. AS AN ART PHOTOGRAPHER, HE PRODUCES CONCEPTUAL PORTRAITS, IN LIMITED EDITION. IN HIS WORK, THE THEME OF 'UNFOLDING AMBIGUITY' PLAYS A CENTRAL ROLE.

Westerhuis started taking photographs at the age of fourteen. He found his father's darkroom fascinating. Westerhuis took photos of moments that caught his eye, such as feet on a staircase. Later he started to portray people. Analogue shooting brought an element of surprise with it. What looked like a fantastic photo could turn out very differently in the darkroom. That made developing a photo a magical process. He took photographs until he was nineteen, after which he left the camera for a long time. His plans to pursue an art degree were interrupted when faith decided he should change direction. For the following 22 years, Westerhuis focused on entrepreneurship. Driven by the desire for independence and autonomy, he created a very successful business conglomerate in the Netherlands. He also invested successfully in real estate and companies. For Westerhuis, entrepreneurship was an art form. Photography faded into the background during these years, but his love for art did not. Westerhuis began collecting contemporary art from the age of 21.

A burnout in 2014 meant that Westerhuis had to stop. His venture was a success, but it came at a price: he was far from feeling well. Haptonomy brought him back in touch with his emotions. He realized that his heart was in photography and decided to pick up the camera again. Photographing was a means for him to come to his feelings. A way to relax, immerse yourself in the moment, without distractions or pressures. To tell stories, to create his own art.

Since then Westerhuis has focused on his art. And he has already achieved great success in this area: his photo series have been exhibited nationally and internationally and have won several awards. The book 'Richard Westerhuis - Unfolding Ambiguity' will be published in 2021, in which his artistry and various photo series are showcased and are placed in the context of art history. Richard Westerhuis is currently focusing on creating new art.
