Back Buttock Stool
2016
Which parts of our body best reveal our identity? As far as Westerhuis is concerned, the backbone could be number one. Why is our identity so closely linked to our face, when most of our body's vital functions run through the spine? Back Buttocks Stool is a crossing of traditional ideas about portrait photography, because the face is missing. The series also raises questions about vulnerability. Why are the figures turning their backs on us? An attitude that is also extra dangerous in an evolutionary sense? This gives the portraits an extra emotional charge. If you look more closely, you will see that the figures look introspective.
